Text 2 (Questions 2-5):

HAIR MYTHS DEBUNKED

Separating truth from follicular fiction.

Myth:Shiny hair is healthy hair.

Truth: Haircare manufacturers keep this widely held belief alive. But, except in rare cases, the hair that grows out of your head is healthy even if it’s not as shiny as you’d like. There’s no shine test to determine the overall health of the hair. Straight hair is shinier than curly hair.

 Myth: Daily washing damages hair.

Truth: If you use a mild shampoo, it’s OK to wash hair daily. Opt for opaque, creamy shampoos over clear formulations.

Myth: Brush your hair up to 100 times a day to make it shine.

Truth: According to the old wives’ tale, you need to brush to disperse the natural oils in your hair. We now know that this happens whether you brush or not. The danger of this old-fashioned tip is that over vigorous treatment can tear hair shafts and damage roots.

 Myth: Daily blow-drying thins hair.

Truth: Trichologists say that daily blow-drying can dehydrate hair and make it frizzy if you don’t use a heat protection styling product. Thinning hair, though, is mainly caused by hormones, age and heredity.

Myth: Vitamin supplements will make hair grow faster.

Truth: Vitamins B6 and B12 are necessary for healthy hair. Most people get enough of these by eating a balanced diet or taking a daily multivitamin. Taking mega amounts won’t make hair any healthier than it is naturally. Supplements that claim to increase hair growth and strength don’t do much either, say dermatologists.

2.       The following are among myths about hair care EXCEPT ….

A.      It is not recommended to wash your hair too often

Therefore, it is no wonder that he has attracted such admiration and fame. Jordan possesses all the qualities of an athletic superstar: extraordinary attractiveness, incredible physical talent, and exemplary character.

Probably no other battle in U.S. history has created more controversy than the Battle of Little Bighorn River. On June 25, 1876, General George Armstrong Custer made his famous last stand against members of the Great Sioux Nation. After dividing the 700 troops of the Seventh Cavalry into three groups that would surround and attack a Native American village, he took command of one group and rushed them into the battle alone. As a result, 3,000 Sioux, led by their chief, Sitting Bull, killed Custer and every one of his 250 men. No one will ever know why Custer ordered his men into such a one-sided fight in which they had no chance for survival. No one will ever know why he did not retreat once the battle had begun. No one will know the answers because no one from Custer’s side lived to tell the story. However, some information about the battle suggests four reasons, one of which is the following.

Custer ignored the orders of his commanding officer. He was supposed to bring his troops to the valley of the Little Byghorn River and wait there until another army division could join him. Text 10 (Questions 25-30):

Sangduen Chailert has elephants on her mind. She works tirelessly to keep the elephant population in Thailand from dwindling to drastic levels. “Thai elephants are under serious threat. Unless they are promptly and appropriately protected, they might only exist in books and photos in the near future,” says Sangduen.

Sangduen was born into a remote mountain community in Northern Thailand 47 years ago. Her love of the pachyderm began when she was very young. She was just a teenager when she first saw elephants being used for commercial logging along the Thai-Burmese border. The experience changed her life.

In 1996, Sangduen, together with her family, founded the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai. Today, the park is supported by Sangduen’s family tour business which runs educational and environmental trips as well as a travel website. The main objective of the park is to provide a sanctuary for elephants to live peacefully in their natural environment. Thirty rescued elephants of all ages are currently under the park’s care. The disabled, orphan or blind elephants are mostly rescued from private owners, and fees are negotiated to enable them to join the park’s herd.

Sangduen’s latest project is to remove elephants from urban cities and bring them back to the natural environment. At present, thousands of elephants wander around big cities like Bangkok with mahouts (elephant caretaker) seeking donations from tourists or the public.

Sangduen also plans to open an elephant centre in Surin, Thailand’s northeastern province considered to be the primary home of indigenous elephants. The new sanctuary will serve as another alternative for mahouts to bring their elephants back home to nature.
